Artist Statement
Through my art practice I share my own threshold moments of presence and transcendence that I have experienced since childhood through my adult life as a female. My work is rooted in the hope of love and communication during my journey from a traditional Asian culture built on male patriarchy to a new world that embraces female empowerment.
Starting with drawings featuring various organic forms of life in nature on a piece of paper, a sense of reproductive blueprint appears on my canvases and later evolves as the subjects. I distort these forms with my imagination to infuse my work with dreamlike, surreal sensibility and narratives and continue to fashion them into something that might evoke the sensuality and seductiveness of procreative nature. This is how I intend to surface, elevate, and celebrate femininity and unbridled female power. I hope the tightly focused and exaggerated moments in my work can suspend a man’s carnal desire and instill a sense of respect and reverence for the creative power of women.
